India ponders sugar deregulation in 2012

The Indian Ministry of Food is in discussions with state governments and associated ministries to remove controls over the country’s sugar industry in the new year.

Food minister K V Thomas said on December 22 that his ministry was talking to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture over deregulating the sector, beginning with the removal of levy sugar in the new year.
The Indian sugar industry currently is obligated to supply 10% of its output to the government of India, which is sent to the country’s Public Distribution System. This 10% is known as levy sugar. .... read more
